I am a freelance mental health trainer and consultant, with twelve years’ experience of delivering a broad range of mental health-related courses.  Since 2005 I have worked for Mind, the national mental health charity, designing and delivering some of their most popular courses, especially those addressing the management of mental health and toxic stress at work.   I facilitate both open access and in house courses, to organisations within the voluntary, statutory and business sectors.

I started to work in the support sector in 1991, key working people who had previously lived long term in psychiatric institutions. I have a varied background in providing support to adults with mental health problems, having worked in hostels, day centres and night shelters, as well as visiting people in their own homes. My management experience is also diverse, including a mental health crisis night centre, at which I set up and promoted a crisis helpline. I then worked for the Telephone Helplines Association, liaising with the Department of Health in order to co-ordinate the Mental Health Helplines Partnership.

I have worked with a wide variety of service users, including older people, homeless people, people with alcohol and/or substance issues, and single, young people experiencing trauma and seeking asylum. I have managed many staff teams, and have learnt a lot ‘on the shop floor’ concerning the management of stress and mental health at work.

I believe that training should be enjoyable and interactive, and that adults learn best when they are involved in educational activities.  Feedback from delegates on my courses is consistently positive, indicating that they too value case studies, the discussion of real life issues, and testing various interpretations.
