Charlotte Walker

My determination to deliver the highest quality mental health training is driven a lifetime of living with bipolar mood disorder. My goal is for lived experience of mental health conditions to be at the heart of training, research and information. Sharing my own experiences helps bring theoretical material alive and helps create an open, honest atmosphere in which delegates feel able to raise the issues that really matter to them.

But it’s not all about me. I am able to share insights from a Twitter network of over ten thousands of service users, carers and mental health professionals and am well known as an online activist. Click the link below to find out more about my award-winning blog, purple persuasion, my appearances in print and broadcast media and my freelance writing on mental health topics.

I am committed to developing more person-centred healthcare and am a founding Public and Patient Voice Expert member of the Coalition for Collaborative Care. I recently completed a user-focused qualitative research study in conjunction with the McPin Foundation and UCL on how women with severe mental illness choose whether to take psychotropic medication in pregnancy, and work has just commenced on a qualitative study examining barriers to participation in research among people with severe mental illness.

I have worked in the health and social care field for over 15 years in both public and third sector organisations, including NHS maternity and clinical governance services and a range of criminal justice settings. I am a qualified Probation Officer with special expertise in substance misuse. I have delivered training to clients as diverse as expectant parents, offenders sentenced to community penalties, medical staff of all grades, substance misuse workers and undergraduates. I am a fully accredited Mental Health First Aid instructor and regularly speak at conferences, seminars and lectures, sharing a taste of what is like for someone with bipolar disorder.

My special interests include mindfulness; social media and mental health; mental health and the criminal justice system; perinatal mental health; therapeutic writing; self-management and recovery planning; and challenging stigma and discrimination.
